Each county lists towns alphabetically. Newspapers for each town are listed alphabetically. Philadelphia newspapers are listed chronologically.
Please note that newspapers changed titles, merged, and split with great frequency. Minor differences in titles, such as "the" are important to distinguish between them. When titles and date ranges appear to be the same, there are differences in publication frequency: daily, weekly, semi-weekly, etc. We have added the frequency in parentheses to the title to help you distinguish between identical titles.
Newspapers in the United States have a long history of associations with political parties, religious groups, ethnic groups, and other community organizations. Many of the newspapers in the State Library's collections contain "Democrat," "Republican," or "Independent" in their titles to signify their political affiliation. This was normal, accepted, and expected by newspaper readers and publishers. For more information about newspapers and political affiliations, see, "Political Parties and the Press" from Encyclopedia.com.
