The management team of the library makes decisions which affect the provision of library service to youth. It is critical that the youth services professional has a voice in these decisions and influences the goals that support the mission of the library. Management also involves articulating those policies into actual practice through supervision of staff and volunteers.
A youth services professional:
Serves as an active part of the management team of the library. Understands and can articulate the mission of the library, as well as the roles and activities of each department. Advocates for best practices in youth and family services.
Works with library leadership to develop and maintain policies that provide access for all.
Understands and stays up to date regarding mandated reporting and clearances for those who work with children on a routine basis.
Works with library administration to develop policies for safety and security such as behavioral policy, emergencies, and missing, lost, and/or unattended children.
Implements and monitors youth services budget to ensure timely spending and best use of funds.
Collaborates with administration to identify outside sources of funding and write effective grant applications.
Collects both quantitative and qualitative output and outcome information to evaluate and improve services to youth and families. Reports information to the library director and board.
Assists library administration with developing youth services job descriptions and participates in the hiring, training, and mentoring of staff and volunteers when appropriate.
Develops and encourages the strengths of staff and volunteers through delegation of responsibilities and regular communication.
Demonstrates good problem-solving, decision-making, and mediation techniques.
