Promising Practices for Youth Services in Pennsylvania's Public Libraries

Collection Development and Curation

Youth services professionals develop collections by evaluating and selecting resources that appeal to and represent a wide variety of learners.  In addition, organizing, maintaining, and promoting existing items are essential in the upkeep of a library collection of resources.  Developing a strong collection development policy and being familiar with library procedures ensures that youth have equitable access to information and resources.

Demonstrates knowledge of literature in all genres and formats for youth of all ages.  Promotes and is familiar with electronic resources available through local and state services.

Maintains a regular weeding and collection audit schedule. Monitors the collection and catalog to delete items that are lost or missing. Identifies materials in poor condition or out of date and evaluates for possible replacement.

Communicates with technical services on cataloging needs for youth collections.

Selects vendors for library materials, considering discounts, fill rates, speed, and customer service, as appropriate.
