A youth services professional:
Develops a youth collection in accordance with the library collection development policy, fulfilling the mission and goals of the library and reflecting the diverse needs of the community. Assists with reviewing and updating the policy as needed.
Demonstrates knowledge of literature in all genres and formats for youth of all ages. Promotes and is familiar with electronic resources available through local and state services.
Makes use of professional review sources and selection lists when considering materials and analyzes the past use of the collection as an aid to judge future selections.
Stays informed about the best apps available for all ages and can recommend them to families.
Promotes the collection in a variety of ways including displays, book talks, readers’ advisory, lists of read-alikes and bibliographies, both in print and online.
Maintains a regular weeding and collection audit schedule. Monitors the collection and catalog to delete items that are lost or missing. Identifies materials in poor condition or out of date and evaluates for possible replacement.
Communicates with technical services on cataloging needs for youth collections.
Selects vendors for library materials, considering discounts, fill rates, speed, and customer service, as appropriate.
